Love is complicated. So much so the Greeks have 8 different words to define the concept. It is hard to watch a movie, listen to a song, or read a book without noticing love is a relevant subtext to the story. Two of the most popular movie franchises to date are Star Wars and The Avengers. Both are stories about intricate universes where the forces of light and dark are at constant odds. However, underneath that, the subtext for both is a story about love. Love of Universe, love of country, love of friends, love of partners, and love of self.
While love in all 8 forms is important, it is hard to deny the most pervasive in our society is Eros. The pursuit of romantic love props the fabric of many world societies; however the commercialization of this concept has left many questioning the validity of its existence or shunning it entirely. One’s belief system about the validity of romantic love is curated through a combination of exposure, experiences, and even genetics. This leaves no two people with the same exact definition of love. However, an outline exists which most might agree is a baseline for defining the concept: Romantic love is maintained by keeping a balance of trust, loyalty, and respect.
